It’s only natural for mature men and women to want to look youthful for a longer period of time. With the advent of researches and studies pertaining to slowing down the process of aging, I have compiled a list of simple rules that we can follow to halt the hands of time.
1. Fight stress
According to recent studies, stress can speed up skin aging. Beating deadlines, financial problems, lack of exercise and unhealthy diet are just some of the common stressors that can cause a string of negative health blows like insomnia, weight gain, impaired immune system which lead to faster biological aging. According to a 2005 study conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, age-related changes in the brain can be prevented by practicing meditation 10 to 20 minutes daily. Meditation can provide you with a sense of peace and calm which can greatly reduce stress more than any medicine could. Yoga, running and breathing exercises are just some of the meditation activities you can engage in.
2. Maintain the same weight
If you want to maintain your current weight, it is important to follow a healthy eating habit. We recommended eating in small proportions about 5 times a day as opposed to eating 3 big meals every day. This will help boost your body’s metabolism rate making it easier to maintain your figure. You can also avoid overeating by drinking a glass of water before and after eating – it will diffuse any craving to eat more and will make you more hydrated at the same time.
3. Make sunscreen your best friend for life
Scientific studies show that long exposure to sun can cause a number of age-related skin conditions like wrinkling, hyperpigmentation and severe dryness. Make it a habit to apply chemical based sunscreen lotions, sprays and creams that provides solid protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. If you have very sensitive skin, settle for mineral based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide. It is imperative to wear sunscreen even during the dead of the winter because the sun’s damaging rays assault the earth all year round.
4. Drench skin with moisture
Keeping your skin moisturized from day to night will help your skin to seal in moisture to make skin soft and supple. Choose a moisturizer that contains essential vitamins, hyaluronic acid, retin-a, shea butter or glycerin to boost cellular turnover and stimulate collagen and elastin growth. These ingredients will help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
5. Exfoliate dead skin cells
Mature skin can sometimes get dull and lackluster and routine exfoliation is one of the best ways to maintain a youthful appearance. Exfoliating the skin will help remove dead skin cells from the surface of the epidermis revealing a more radiant, glowing complexion. It can also help clear out congested pores allowing the skin to breathe properly. This skincare method also helps even out the tone and texture of the skin making it skin look and feel healthier, supple and more vibrant. Be reminded to limit exfoliation to up to two times a week or you may end up cutting your skin red raw.
